Whew, this was my experience, too – and I'm just now diving into how much it affected me since I'm raising my own kids now (and would NEVER do this shit, what in the world)
Me too! The parenting part is what’s still following me around. My husband and I are still trying to figure out what sex ex is appropriate and when (and should the school help? Or should it be a parent-kid discussion?). Anyway, I’m in it with you as a mixed up mom!
oh gosh, this was painful to read, and I can't thank you enough for sharing. I mostly learned from my family that holding hands / dancing leads to unwanted pregnancies. So instead, I read a ton of books that I wasn't supposed to that talked AROUND sex, and then learned A LOT after I got married, culminating in reading Come As You Are several years ago. I feel like I'm still learning and catching up.
Ok this is wild. I didn’t know it was a common thing to take kids on a “fun trip” to chat about the birds and the bees. I thought I was the only one 🤣 my mom took me to Carowinds and we definitely listened to the tapes on the long drive there and back. I had an uncomfortable time because it was awkward and impossible to have fun with the awkwardness hanging over us.
Yep, I think it was a FOTF suggestion to do the trip + tales for the sex talk... cause I’ve chatted with MANY kids of evangelicals who went through the same thing. I appreciate intentionality, but disagree with the material and making it a one-time thing, obvs. Sigh.
I also learned about sex from probably this very cassette tape - just in the minivan with the whole family 🙈 mortifying! Thanks for listening so we never have to again. Especially grossed by these lines: “Those who have premarital sex may experience personality changes, becoming cold, bitter, and miserable. And if you’ve had sex even once outside of marriage, you may never enjoy sex again. But you won’t have to worry about that as long as you and your partner both have never had sex.” Ugghhhhh

Also my mom gave my little brother and I each a book at the same time. I found it kind of embarrassing to read about, but my brother was much more mortified (being a lot younger) and I teased him mercilessly until Mom made me stop. The poor kid!
"Boys will begin to show interest in your body, but you will only be attracted to their personalities." WHAT. Sorry, Liz. My story isn't much better. My mom sat down with me and a book (Christian publisher) and blushed whenever I asked her questions.

I KNOW. That quote us unreal. And also, I cannot BELIEVE this was a group activity for your fam!!!
Are these exact quotes from the Dobson tape, or a paraphrase? Because good grief, they're awful.
...exact quotes. Yep. 😳
Ick.

Omg. 😅🤦🏻♀️ I actually feel a lot of grace for our parents. Cause this BS was what they had to work with!!
